Troopers seeking information about grizzly shot, left to die near Nome

Alaska Wildlife Troopers are looking for information on a grizzly bear found shot near Cape Nome earlier this month.

The dead bear was discovered at the Cape Nome quarry, about 12 miles east of Nome, on Sept. 5, troopers wrote in an online dispatch.

"The animal was shot and left to die," the dispatch said.

Troopers want to find the person or people responsible for failing to salvage the meat, which is a misdemeanor crime in Alaska.

Anyone with information is asked to contact troopers at 1-800-478-3377.

The Sept. 5 incident is not the only recent case of grizzly bear waste in the Nome area.

In late August, a 19-year-old from Nome and two other teens from Golovin pleaded guilty to one count each of taking a grizzly bear in closed season and failure to salvage after killing a bear on the Kachavik River near Golovin in July and attempting to conceal the carcass, according to troopers.

Each of the three received probation and fines.

Golovin is about 65 miles east of Nome on the Seward Peninsuvla.
