2 hurt when SUV carrying 6 slides off Seward Hwy. in rain

Two people were injured in a Turnagain Pass crash on the Seward Highway during heavy rains Wednesday night when an SUV carrying six people slid off the roadway, troopers said.

Alaska State Troopers said in a Thursday dispatch that they responded just before 7 p.m. to Mile 66.7 of the highway, where 57-year-old Anchorage resident Donald Raney had been at the wheel of an SUV headed south.

"Raney's vehicle hydroplaned on the wet pavement," troopers reported. "The southbound vehicle went off the northbound side of the highway and rolled onto its left side."

All six adults in the SUV were wearing seat belts but two of Raney's passengers suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and were taken to an Anchorage hospital by Girdwood-based medics.

Troopers said Raney's vehicle was towed from the scene after sustaining at least $500 in damage during the crash.
