Authorities detonate explosives found in Interior Alaska shop

Authorities are detonating more than 115 pounds of explosives found in a shop last week on a residential property in the Delta Junction area, Alaska State Troopers said Sunday.

A friend of the property owner discovered the 80 pounds of "degraded dynamite" while cleaning out a shop building at the Big Delta property on Sept. 16, troopers wrote in an online dispatch.

Explosive specialists from nearby Eielson Air Force Base ultimately found even more explosives.

On Sunday, the Eielson specialists, Fort Greely Fire Department, Rural Deltana Volunteer Fire Department and troopers disposed of a "large portion" of the explosives in five detonations, according to the dispatch.

"A plan is still being developed for the remaining explosives," troopers wrote.

A trooper spokesperson did not immediately respond to questions about the identity of the property owner or why the cache of explosives was in the shop.
