South Fairbanks shooting was targeted attack, police say

Fairbanks police have released new details about a Wednesday shooting that left a woman wounded and two suspects at large, with investigators still trying to track down the shooters.

Amber Courtney, a spokeswoman for Fairbanks Mayor John Eberhart's office, said the shooting -- first reported at about 10:50 a.m. at a residence on the 1000 block of 24th Avenue -- now appears to have been a targeted incident. She declined to discuss why the shooting was targeted or whether drug or gang activity were involved, citing the ongoing investigation by police.

"We don't believe it was just random shooting of people -- this was a specific attack," Courtney said. "It appears that she was intentionally shot."

Police haven't yet identified the woman who was shot but expect her to make a full recovery.

Officers had initially told residents to avoid the area of the shooting but lifted that perimeter after realizing the attack wasn't random.

"Once we had canvassed the area we did not believe there was a continued threat to public safety," Courtney said.

Courtney said Thursday that investigators are still working to get better descriptions of the suspects -- initially described Wednesday as two armed black males running from the scene, one wearing a hoodie and one wearing a beanie -- as well as apprehend them.

"We have to rely on what the witnesses tell us, and that's the best information we have from the witnesses at this time," Courtney said.
