Man accused of Anchorage bank robberies arrested

The FBI says a man wanted for bank robberies in Anchorage was found hiding in the back of a van Monday.

Police arrested Gregory Cannon shortly after he robbed a Midtown Anchorage bank that morning, according to the FBI. The Anchorage Police Department helped track down Cannon, it said.

APD contacted the FBI after an officer recognized Cannon as someone he was supervising on probation related to a past federal conviction for bank robbery, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court on Tuesday.

At about 10 a.m. Monday, Cannon handed a Credit Union 1 bank teller a note indicating he had a gun and demanding money, the FBI said. He left with an undisclosed amount of cash and got into a cab.

The FBI says no weapon was seen during the robbery.

Cannon is set to appear in federal court in Anchorage on Wednesday. He faces four counts of bank robbery and attempted bank robbery, according to the complaint.

Authorities say Cannon robbed a bank and tried to rob another on Sept. 23. He used the same tactics during the more recent robbery. During one of those robberies, the note said he'd use a gun to get money, according to the complaint.

"The teller looked at the subject after reading the note and (he) told her twice, 'Don't make me shoot,'" the complaint says.

The charging document says Cannon did not take extra measures to hide his identity.
