Seminars aimed at Alaska women in the outdoors

Noting that 46 percent of the 143 million Americans who participate in outdoor activities are women – and potential customers – the Anchorage Cabela's will celebrate a Ladies Out event on Oct 10.

Seminars run 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the first 100 women in line for the sessions will receive a free gift bag. According to Cabela's Retail Marketing Manager Carri Pratt, more than 700 women attended last year. There will be an array of sessions, including

Archery for Women: Alaska hunter and fishing guide Greg Brush and his 17-year-old daughter, bowhunter Kendra Brush, will offer advice on how to get started, equipment, and hunting prospects. Kendra will give a short presentation at 1 p.m. that will include details of her hunt that yielded a Pope and Young record brown bear.

Flyfishing with longtime expert and advocate Pudge Kleinkauf at 1 and 2 p.m.

Kenai trapping seminar

The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge will conduct a trapper orientation class and snaring seminar 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 24 at the refuge's Environmental Education Center on Ski Hill Road in Soldotna.

Anyone who wants to trap in the refuge must attend at least one orientation class, although trappers who've previously attended need not repeat the popular class, which can draw more than 70 people.

Permits for the 2015-16 season will be available at refuge headquarters starting Oct. 9. Call refuge officer Joe Williams for information at 907-260-2852.
