Two people escape Mat-Su house fire

A small home burned in a fire Monday afternoon in the West Lakes area west of Wasilla, but first responders say the occupants safely escaped.

According to Ken Barkley, deputy director for emergency services with Mat-Su Borough Emergency Services, units were dispatched to the blaze at a roughly 20-foot-by-20-foot home off Pittman Road just after 12:20 p.m.

"The first unit on location called it in fully involved," Barkley said.

Barkley credited crews already deployed Monday morning with responding almost immediately to the fire, which was nearly under control by 12:30 p.m.

"We've got crews in the area doing fire prevention, so they were able to get there fast," Barkley said.

The Red Cross was responding Monday afternoon to assist a man and a woman displaced by the fire.
