Wasilla hunter falls to his death on Pioneer Peak

A 49-year-old hunter fell to his death from Pioneer Peak over the weekend, Alaska State Troopers say.

According to a dispatch posted online by troopers, Roy Roth of Wasilla was hunting sheep on the 6,398-foot peak near Goat Creek Sunday when he fell down the mountainside. A hunter who was with Roth hiked down and found him dead. Troopers were notified of the incident shortly after 6 p.m.

Roth's body had not yet been recovered by 3 p.m. Monday, troopers said. Rescuers with the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group are coordinating the recovery with troopers due to the "difficult terrain" where Roth's body is located.
