Doubles team leads three-time champion West into state tennis tourney

Two reigning state champions will chase more titles this week at the high school tennis championships at The Alaska Club East.

Both play for the West Eagles, who have ruled the state tournament the last three years and have taken home the team title five times in the eight-year history of the tournament.

One of them is Allie Haynes, a two-time girls doubles champ. The other is Ava Lekander, who won girls singles last year but is playing doubles with Haynes this year. Haynes' partner from the last two seasons, Katie Brown, graduated last spring.

Haynes and Lekander are the top seeds in girls doubles and will face the Lathrop team of Anna Kardash and Amara Hackett in an opening-round match Friday at 11:15 a.m.

The only other top seed from Anchorage is Christine Hemry, a freshman from South and last week's CIC girls singles champ.

All of the other top seeds are from West Valley, including Jared Lee, who after two straight seasons as the runner-up in boys singles is the favorite this time around.

Brandon Vanlandingham and Brian Ely are the top seeds in boys doubles, and Trent Chiu and Teresa Sample are the top seeds in mixed doubles.

The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Finals are scheduled to be played Saturday afternoon.
