Juneau prison housing unit damaged in 'serious disturbance'

A "serious disturbance" occurred at Lemon Creek Correctional Center in Juneau on Monday night, according to a Department of Corrections official.

There were no injuries to staff or prisoners during the disturbance, which was confined to a single housing unit, said Sherrie Daigle, special assistant to the DOC commissioner.

The housing unit was damaged, Daigle said. She did not immediately respond to requests for additional details. Lemon Creek houses primarily sentenced felons.

DOC's director of institutions and a facility manager visited Lemon Creek on Wednesday estimated the housing unit's damage to be between $6,000 and $8,000, Daigle said.

The corrections department contacted Alaska State Troopers for assistance with the investigation, said troopers' spokesperson Megan Peters. No one has been charged, she said.
