Fairbanks man charged with kidnapping, assaulting woman

Alaska State Troopers have arrested a Fairbanks man on a series of charges, including kidnapping, after a woman said he repeatedly assaulted her at a home north of the city.

Court records showed John Marshall Hume, 47, facing four felony charges: two counts of second-degree assault, one count kidnapping involving injury or sexual assault, and one count of coercion involving instilling a fear of injury. Hume was also charged with one misdemeanor count of fourth-degree assault in the case.

According to a Thursday dispatch, troopers initially investigated the assault, at a residence on Goldstream Road, just before 4 p.m. Sunday.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email the victim suffered "bumps, bruises and soreness" in the assaults, which took place over the course of two days beginning Saturday. The woman told investigators that Hume had demanded oral sex from her, then pushed her to the floor and pulled her hair when she declined, Peters wrote.

On Sunday, troopers said, Hume cuffed the woman's arms behind her back for about 45 minutes, banged her head against the floor, and repeatedly strangled her.

Peters said Thursday that the kidnapping charge didn't involve Hume abducting the victim from elsewhere.

"He just didn't let her leave," Peters said.

Troopers weren't able to arrest Hume on Sunday, because he refused to exit his home or speak with them.

"We did not want to push a dangerous situation due to the fact that Hume implied that he was going to react violently if AST entered his house," Peters wrote.

An arrest warrant was ultimately served on Hume at his Fairbanks workplace Monday. Hume was held at the Fairbanks Correctional Center, where an online inmate database listed him as still in custody Thursday.
