A 38-year-old man died Sunday after he collided with a moose on Minnesota Drive, Anchorage police said. Another vehicle crashed into a guardrail trying to avoid the motorcycle, prompting an hours-long road closure.
It was the second fatal collision between a moose and a vehicle in two days in Alaska's largest city.
A statement from Anchorage Police Department spokesperson Jennifer Castro said Justin Jones was traveling northbound on Minnesota just after midnight when he collided with the moose. Both Jones and the moose were killed in the accident.
"Following the collision, the motorcycle continued down the roadway and into oncoming lanes of traffic where an SUV avoided colliding with the motorcycle and collided with a guard rail in the process," Castro wrote.
The SUV driver wasn't hurt in that crash, though the accidents closed the highway for "a couple of hours" while police investigated, Castro wrote.
The accident came just one day after another driver, 45-year-old Gerardo Lopez Rios, died when his vehicle collided with a moose at the intersection of DeArmoun Road and Norgaard Road. The moose in that incident was put down due to its injuries.
