Prep volleyball: South turns back Dimond to remain unbeated in CIC

For the second time this season, the South and Dimond volleyball teams attracted a big crowd, and for the second time this season, the Wolverines pull out a victory.

South beat Dimond 25-20, 22-25, 25-15, 26-24 Thursday night to remain undefeated in Cook Inlet Conference play.

A crowd of about 650 packed the South gym for the battle between two teams that have dominated Alaska volleyball for the last decade.

"Both sides did great," South coach Judy Knecht said. "It was quite the battle. This was a great win for us. It's hard to beat a good team multiple times."

Emma Kleven quarterbacked South's offense with 37 assists and Makenna Hurd anchored the defense with 18 digs.

Tatum Upchurch had a match-high 12 kills and EmilyeGrace Williams and Ashton Jessee both added nine kills for the Wolverines, who also got five blocks apiece from Jessee and Jaidyn Kinneeveauk.

Dimond got a big match from Cali Clark (8 kills, 16 digs), Brynn Sulte (6 kills, 11 digs) and Teuila Lolotai (23 assists, 13 digs). Jenna Hickel came up with a match-high 30 digs and Alissa Pili provided a team-high 11 kills for the Lynx. Clare Dieckgraeff added seven kills.

Grace 3, Homer 0

Annie VanderWeide smashed eight kills and Kaitlin Cowell distributed 16 assists Thursday to carry Grace Christian past Homer in a Class 3A volleyball match at Grace Christian.

The Grizzlies won 25-17, 25-18, 25-16.

Su Valley triumphs

Su Valley outlasted Holy Rosary in five sets Thursday, claiming a 22-25, 25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 15-9 win in the Class 1A/2A match.

Monica Klump handed out 23 assists and smashed seven kills and Sarah Lucas puts down 11 kills for Holy Rosary.

West 3, Chugiak 0

Mia Keyser's 11 kills and eight digs sparked West's sweep of Chugiak in a Wednesday night CIC volleyball match at West.

Brooke Dexter added eight kills and Alyssa Albright had 10 digs for the Eagles, who prevailed 25-18, 25-22, 27-25. Rosie Rush ran the offense with20 assists.

Emily Moorhead supplied seven kills and seven digs, Megan Meadows chipped in seven kills and Sophia Lestina had five to lead Chugiak.

Bartlett 3, Service 1

Fueled by Julia Tosi's nine kills and 11 digs, Bartlett turned back Service in four sets Wednesday at Service.

Kendra Cornell added six kills and three blocks and Loryanna Atafua provided 26 assists and five digs in the 25-19, 25-20, 21-25, 25-23 win by the Golden Bears.

Service was powered by Emily Rosenfield (7 kills, 3 aces), Ally Jones (15 assists) and Karisa Davis (8 kills).
