Some Alaskans crushed it over the weekend

Several Alaskans and Alaska-connected players delivered performances over the weekend that merit recapping.

Eagle River goaltender Andrew Shortridge crushed it in the British Columbia Hockey League, racking three wins, including his first shutout on the circuit, for the Vernon Vipers. Shortridge made 41 saves in a 5-1 win over Trail, 46 saves in a 3-0 win over Merritt and another 35 saves in a 5-3 win at Merritt.

Shortridge, 20, is committed to Quinnipiac. He's 7-3-0 (tied third in league in wins), 2.15 (fourth) and .930 (sixth).

In the National Women's Hockey League, Anchorage's Zoe Hickel and Jordan Smelker both flourished for the Boston Pride in Sunday's 7-1 win over the New York Riveters. Hickel bagged two goals and a helper in the club's second game of the season, and Smelker scored a goal for the second straight game. Both players will skate for the national team in the Four Nations tournament later this month.

On the WCHA front, UAA freshman defenseman Wyatt Ege earned the Rookie of the Week honor for his two third-period goals -- one tied the game, the other won it -- in a 4-3 win over Rensselaer.

And UAF sophomore center Tayler Munson of Fairbanks earned the Offensive Player of the Week award after his six-point explosion -- two goals and one helper in each of two games -- at the Nanooks' Brice Alaska Goal Rush. Munson was voted MVP of the tournament, which the Nanooks won for the sixth time in eight all-time editions. His four goals marked a tournament record.
