Scary good time: Halloween events both frightful and fun in and around Anchorage

It's that time of year — rustle up a costume, gather your little goblins and hit the streets for some spooky, candy-spiked fun. There's already been a sprinkling of prelude festivities, but this year Oct. 31 conveniently falls on Saturday, so expect most parties to go down this weekend. Whether you're looking for something scandalous, scary, family-friendly or somewhat in between, there are plenty of options in Anchorage and surrounding areas.

For grown-up ghouls & ghosties

Goblins and Growlers — The Historic Anchorage Hotel has a longstanding reputation for being haunted, and this year it will combine boo and brew. Come dressed in your Halloween costume for beer tasting, appetizers and treats. Best costume will take home the biggest prize. 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Historic Anchorage Hotel, 330 E St. $40. 36 Crazyfists and All Hail the Yeti — Alaska's biggest metal band, 36 Crazyfists, is home for Halloween and has brought All Hail the Yeti with them. First concert is set for 8 p.m. Thursday at Chilkoot Charlie's. City In Ashes and Shifter will round out the bill. Ages 21 and older. Nocturnal Halloween Massive — Get some bone-rattling bass with K.J. Sawka and producer ill.Gates, who will go all out in a head-to-head battle live onstage. Time travel costume dance party — Step up your Halloween game by mastering the steps of salsa (starts at 8 p.m.) and bachata (at 9 p.m.). Bowie Bash — Bust out your best Bowie for this Halloween party at Williwaw. Tribute band Space Oddity will provide the tunes and there's a $500 "Best Bowie" costume contest prize. Freakshow at Sixth and F — Head to the Humpy's/SubZero/Flattop complex downtown for dangerous drinks, thumping music and cash prizes, starting at 10 p.m. Saturday. This is a 21 and older event with no cover. Nervis Rex will play at Humpy's, DJ Spencer Lee at Flattop and DJ Victamone at Sub Zero, so prepare to get your boogie man moves on. Alyeska Halloween Train and Lez Zeppelin in concert — Climb aboard the Alyeska Halloween Train for a ghoulish night of dining, dancing and Lez Zeppelin in concert. Costumes are encouraged and prizes will be awarded. This event is for ages 21 and older only. The package is based on double occupancy and includes the train ride from Anchorage with motorcoach return on Sunday. Skinny Raven's Frightening 4-K — Back for the third year, this out-and-back course will have team and individual costume contests with prizes after the run. Zoo Boo — There will be be treat stations and activities all over the Alaska Zoo this Saturday, along with trail decorations, event staff in costumes and a bonfire for warming toes. Halloween Ceili — In the Celtic tradition, Halloween is the time when the veils that separate the world of the living and the world of the spirits are lifted and the living and the dead may pass into each other's world. Mall-oween: Say Boo to Hunger — Stay out of the cold at the Dimond Center and trick or treat to benefit local charities. Your donation of $5 will benefit the Red Cross of Alaska or your donation of two cans of food per participant will benefit the Food Bank of Alaska. Halloween pizza party ­— Fire Island Rustic Bakeshop will host its annual pizza party Saturday at its 1340 G St. location. The once-a-year pizza tradition includes a variety of selections, including cheese, margherita, Italian sausage, roasted vegetable and wild mushrooms. The pizzas are $10-$15 and can be pre-ordered by calling the G Street location at 569-0001. The bakery hours are extended to 8 p.m. at both locations.
