3 men arrested in connection with Fairbanks shooting death outside nightclub

Authorities arrested one man in Texas, one man in Florida and one man in Alaska this week in connection with a Fairbanks shooting death this summer, police said Thursday.

In the early morning of May 17, John Kavairlook Jr. was shot multiple times in a Fairbanks parking lot after a fight at the Rock N Rodeo nightclub. Kavairlook died at the scene, according to a statement from the Fairbanks Police Department.

On Tuesday, U.S. marshals and detectives with the New Braunfels Police Department in Texas arrested Joel Joseph, 26, in nearby Selma on a warrant for first-degree murder. Joseph lived in Anchorage and moved to New Braunfels two days after Kavairlook was killed, according to Fairbanks police.

Joseph's brother, David Joseph, 34, was arrested in Anchorage Tuesday and indicted on charges of hindering prosecution in the first degree, police said.

On Wednesday, Demarius Hinson, 25, was arrested in Orlando, Florida, on a $500,000 warrant for hindering prosecution in the first degree. Hinson lived in Anchorage but left the country after Kavairlook was killed. He returned to the United States a month ago, according to police.

Police said in a statement they expect to make additional arrests and investigators will not release the roles each suspect played until all arrests have been made.

"Investigators have spent well over 3,000 hours working on this case," Fairbanks Mayor John Eberhart said in the statement.

Fairbanks police have asked anyone with information about the shooting to call detective Peyton Merideth at 907-450-6592 or email lpmerideth@ci.fairbanks.ak.us.
