Ostrander, a Boise State freshman from Soldotna, captured her first collegiate conference championship Friday in Reno, Nevada, where she grabbed a 15-second victory in the women's 6,000-meter race at the Mountain West Conference cross-country championship meet.

Along with the race victory, which Ostrander earned with a time of 21 minutes, 49.97 seconds, came a bounty of conference awards. Besides being honored as athlete of the year and freshman of the year, Ostrander was a first-team all-conference pick.

Ostrander became the second freshman in conference history and the third straight Boise State runner to win the women's individual title at the MWC championships. Her performance helped Boise State finish second in the women's team standings, behind New Mexico.

In four races this season, Ostrander owns three victories and one runner-up finish. At a big meet in Wisconsin earlier this month, she beat a pair of NCAA champions while breaking a course record set by a former NCAA champion. Early in the season she took a break from college running to travel to Wales, where she captured the gold medal at the World Mountain Running junior championships.

A three-time Alaska state cross-country champion who as a junior and senior broke state track records at 1,600 and 3,200 meters, Ostrander will try to continue her fabulous freshman season at the NCAA Division I West Region championships Nov. 13 in Seattle.
