The Alaska National Guard and the Alaska Department of Military and Veterans Affairs will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Alaska National Guard armory on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Immediately after the Veterans Day ceremony, Canadian forces will conduct a Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Fort Richardson National Cemetery. In Canada, Remembrance Day commemorates Canadians who died in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Afghanistan and in the line of their peacekeeping duties. JBER leadership will lay wreaths at this ceremony.
The East High School Student Government conducts a Veterans Day commemoration beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the school commons. A tradition since 2004, students write the names of every soldier who has made the ultimate sacrifice since the previous year's commemoration. Students read the names aloud. Participants then move outdoors, where a student plays "Taps" and 100 balloons are released: red, white and blue for the U.S. flag, and gold for those who will not return.
The West High School Air Force JROTC Program has a special flag-raising ceremony at 7 a.m. in front of the school. This event is timed to coincide with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. All veterans are invited to attend and participate.
VFW 1685 hosts a flag folding ceremony conducted by Service High School JROTC students, 6 p.m. Wednesday at 1200 W. 33rd Ave. The post serves a free meal of fried chicken, mashed potatoes and pie to veterans after the ceremony.

Veterans Day breakfast, 8-9 a.m. at Primrose Retirement Community, 889 N. Elkhorn Drive, Wasilla.
Mat-Su College hosts a Veterans Day tribute and reception, noon-2 p.m. Wednesday in the Glenn Massay Theater, 8295 College Drive. A flag ceremony and light refreshments are planned to honor all who served in times of war and peace.
