Troopers: Fairbanks man kidnapped, assaulted woman for weeks

A man flown with an injured woman from a cabin near Manley Hot Springs on Sunday has been charged with kidnapping and sexually assaulting her for more than a month.

Alaska State Troopers said in a Thursday dispatch Daniel L. Selovich, 37, was arrested on one count each of kidnapping and third-degree assault, as well as two counts each of first-degree sexual assault and fourth-degree assault.

The case first came to troopers' attention on Saturday when they received a call reporting "a seriously ill woman in need of transport to the hospital" at the cabin, roughly 16 miles south of the hot springs, which host a community of about 100 people at the end of the Elliott Highway, about 160 miles west of Fairbanks.

Troopers began to coordinate a rescue flight with the 11th Air Force's Rescue Coordination Center at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. A rescue chopper crew didn't reach the cabin until Sunday morning, when they flew Selovich and the woman to Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.

"AST met them at FMH and determined that the woman was a victim of domestic violence-related assaults between (Oct. 1) and (Saturday)," troopers reported. "Selovich reportedly held the woman against her will for five weeks at the remote cabin. He reportedly subjected the woman to many (sexual) assaults, and assaulted her several times causing nonlife-threatening injuries."

Court records show Selovich was arraigned Tuesday in Fairbanks. Selovich is being held at the Fairbanks jail without bail, according to a booking officer.

Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly implied that Daniel Selovich was released on bail.
