Man lying on Bethel road run over and killed, police say

BETHEL – A pedestrian lying on a road in Bethel was run over by a vehicle and killed Saturday evening, Bethel police reported Tuesday.

Police identified the man as Paul Frank, 41, of Tuntutuliak. The incident on Ptarmigan Street, near the AC Quick Stop store, was reported to police at 6:50 p.m. Saturday.

"It was dark. The individual was wearing dark clothing. He was lying in the roadway, and he was run over by the vehicle," Police Chief Andre Achee said.

Police are not releasing the driver's name, said patrol Sgt. Kadri Limani. The police chief said the driver does not appear to have done anything wrong. The vehicle was a 1996 green Nissan SUV. Witnesses who weren't involved told police what they saw and there was no indication of foul play, Achee said.

Medics took the man to the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp. hospital for treatment. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room.

The man may have been passed out in the roadway, Achee said. Police said they are awaiting toxicology results and a determination of what killed him.

This story has been updated to include the name of the man killed.
