Hilltop opens — Hilltop Ski Area season opens 3 p.m. for the 2015-16 season after weeks of snowmaking. Terrain park for snowboarders. Rentals available. (hilltopskiarea.org)

Challenge Alaska meet and greet — Challenge Alaska Adaptive Ski and Snowboard School is looking for volunteers for the upcoming ski season. Speedskating — Alaska Speedskating Club offers opportunities for people of all ages to learn how to speed skate. The first session is free. Skates and protective gear are provided. Bring your own helmet if you have one. Come at 7:45 a.m. Saturday to get gear, if needed. Club members also skate 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays, Subway Sports Centre. Avalanche safety — Join American Avalanche Association certified instructor Blaine Smith for an introduction to avalanche awareness. MONDAY

Alaska Outdoors evening hikes — Easy to moderate social hikes every Monday and Thursday all year throughout Anchorage. Monday hike is for beginners and families with children, on established wide and mostly flat trails for 1.5 hours. Beginning adult classic ski lessons — Learn to cross-country ski with Anchorage Parks and Recreation. Beginners learn to diagonal stride, stop, turn, use poles, climb hills and move over varied terrain. Other topics include proper clothing and equipment and waxing for conditions. Taught as a four-lesson series for those who would like more practice with an instructor in a small group setting. 6:30-8 p.m. Monday, Kincaid Outdoor Center. $80. (343-6397)

Learn archery — Want to learn how to shoot a bow and arrow? Instructors from Northwest Archers will offer their expertise. All instructors are certified by the National Archery in the Schools Program. Northwest Archers will supply equipment for your use. All skill levels welcome. Parents must accompany children. 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Kincaid Annex. Free. (343-6397)
