Another rout for undefeated UAA women's basketball team

A milestone for Jessica Madison, a productive inside game and a huge second half provided the highlights in the latest runaway victory by the UAA women's basketball team.

Madison, a senior guard, scored her 1,000th career point – plus one more – Thursday in a 92-39 rout of Hawaii-Hilo in Hilo.

Madison netted 12 points to reach 1,001 for her career, becoming the 13th player in program history to hit the 1,000-point mark. She was 1 of 4 for the first half but improved to 4 of 7 in the second half.

"That's a special thing," UAA coach Ryan McCarthy said. "She scored about 10 points in the last four or five minutes, so it was good to see her get her confidence back on her shot."

UAA outscored Hilo 45-14 in the second half to coast to remain undefeated their ninth straight victory.

Megan Mullings, a 6-foot senior forward, poured in 24 points on 11 of 13 to lead all scorers and help the Seawolves reach one of their goals for the game.

"One of our emphases this game was to get the ball inside," McCarthy said. "Against Hawaii Pacific we settled for jump shots a little too early and in this one we did a much better job. Our two posts finished really well around the basket and it helped open up our shooters on the perimeter."

UAA's other post, 6-1 freshman Hannah Wandersee, was 3 of 4 before leaving the game with a ankle injury. Adriana Dent also suffered an injury, tweaking a knee that has limited her already this season.

Both players are likely to sit out Friday's rematch with Hilo, the last of three games in Hawaii for the Seawolves. McCarthy said Wandersee should be fine for next week's Great Alaska Shootout but Dent is 50-50.

UAA shot 53.6 percent from the field, outrebounded the Vulcans 47-25 and swiped the ball 14 times.

Christina Davis had one of her best games with a career-high 15 points on 7 of 14 shooting and grabbed six rebounds to lead that category along with Mullings.

Kiki Robertson had a game-high four steals and eight assists and Jenna Buchanan added 13 points for the Seawolves.

UAA's full-court press handcuffed Hilo (0-1), which shot 28.9 percent and turned over the ball 27 times.
