Troopers investigating possible homicide on island near Kodiak

The death of a 56-year-old man found outside a Shuyak Island bunkhouse Tuesday is being investigated as a homicide, Alaska State Troopers said Thursday.

Troopers responded to the Port William Wilderness Lodge near Kodiak Island after the agency received a welfare check request. They found the man with a gunshot wound, troopers reported in a dispatch.

Troopers say they have a suspect who traveled to Anchorage after the incident. The suspect was later arrested by Anchorage police on an unrelated arrest warrant.

"The suspect warrants were misdemeanor warrants, however, one was for failure to remand to jail, so the suspect is currently serving time and unable to post bail," troopers said.

The man's body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy. Troopers are working with the Kodiak District Attorney's Office to determine what charges will be filed.

On Thursday afternoon, troopers said, they were still working to identify the man's next of kin.
