Seawolves cruise past Life Pacific in men's basketball

Christian Leckband is the only senior on the UAA men's basketball team and his leadership showed Friday in the Seawolves' dominating 101-54 win over Life Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The 6-foot-7 forward from Nome finished with 27 points on the first day of the two-day Seawolf Jamboree. He hit 11 of 17 shots from the field, including 4 of 7 from 3-point land.

The Seawolves got a boost from both Alaskans on the roster in their their sixth straight victory. Freshman guard Damien Fulp of Palmer had 15 points and five assists off the bench.

UAA (6-2) also got 20 points, nine rebounds and four assists from Division I Idaho transfer Suki Wiggs, a 6-4 guard who went 9 of 11 from the free-throw line. Wiggs has finished with 20 or more points in seven of eight games this season.

Junior guard Spencer Sjevcar, a transfer from Laramie County Community College, finished with 14 points, and Corey Hammell, a transfer from Santa Rose Junior College, grabbed a team-high eight rebounds to go with nine points.

UAA never trailed. The Seawolves shot 54.4 percent from the field, getting assists on 25 of 31 baskets. and shot 83.8 percent from the free-throw line, where they were 31 of 37.

Life Pacific's scoring leaders came off the bench -- Steven Madison had 11 points and James Noble 10.

The game was the second of two Friday in the four-team, round-robin tournament. In the earlier game, UAF dominated the paint with both starting forwards earning double-doubles to lead the Nanooks to an 81-73 victory over Cal State-Dominguez Hills.

Junior Bangaly Kaba had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and senior Travante Williams added 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds for UAF. Guards Ashton Edwards and Joe Slocum scored 15 points and 12 points, respectively.

The Toros led for much of the first half on solid shooting from starting guard Ivan Dooley and reserve guard Vincent Golson. The duo combined for 39 points.

The tournament concludes Saturday at the Alaska Airlines Center with Life Pacific playing UAF at 1 p.m. and UAA taking on Cal State-Dominguez Hills at 3 p.m.
