UAA skiers Kanady, Richard triumph in Alaska Nordic Cup races at Hatcher Pass

The weekend storm provided ample snow for a season-opening ski race for the UAA and UAF cross-country teams Saturday at Hatcher Pass.

UAA's Mackenzie Kanady and Etienne Richard captured classic-technique victories on the first day of the two-day 12th annual Alaska Nordic Cup.

Kanady set the pace in the women's 5-kilometer race at the Government Peak trails, winning in 18 minutes, 14.8 seconds.

UAF's Anne-Tine Markset was second (18:22.4) and UAA's Manon Locatelli was third (19:01.9).

In the men's 10-K, Richard clocked 33:07.4 to beat UAF's Michael Ferenbach (33:12). Third place went to UAF's Max Donaldson (33:23.4).

Racing continues Sunday at Government Peak with a freestyle mixed relay. The Nanooks lead both the men's and women's team standings.
