New CO leak found at Meadow Lakes home evacuated last week

Medics have returned to a Mat-Su home where six people were evacuated due to a carbon monoxide leak last week, due to new reports of the deadly gas inside the residence.

Ken Barkley, deputy director of emergency services for Mat-Su Emergency Services, said responders were called to the Meadow Lakes Loop Road home at about 11 a.m. Monday.

"It does appear that we are getting some readings," Barkley said. "(They're) very low levels."

Medics evaluated all of the people who were in the home at the scene, but none of them were hospitalized.

A furnace at the residence was blamed for the first incident on Nov. 16, which saw medics evacuate six people exposed to potentially lethal levels of the colorless, odorless gas. Barkley said one of them was barely able to dial 911, and two adults and four children were briefly hospitalized at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center.

Representatives of natural gas company Enstar were on their way to the home Monday afternoon to conduct an appliance-by-appliance evaluation of equipment and determine the leak's source.

"They have special equipment to determine what's actually the problem," Barkley said. "We have to find the source, so that's just normal procedure."

The family, which didn't have a CO detector at the time of the first call, has since purchased one.

"That's what went off," Barkley said.
