2 drivers hurt in wreck near Girdwood that closed Seward Highway

The Seward Highway has reopened after a Monday collision that sent two drivers to the hospital and closed the highway near the Alyeska Highway intersection in Girdwood.

Troopers said in a dispatch that the crash -- which injured Soldotna resident Trapper Dan Poindexter, 36, and 27-year-old Chadwick Dixon Kyffin of Seward – was first reported at about 6 a.m.

"Investigation revealed that a 1989 Toyota Camry driven by (Poindexter) was driving northbound when it was struck head-on by a southbound 1999 Jeep driven by (Kyffin)," troopers wrote. "Both drivers were transported to an Anchorage hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash and are reportedly in stable condition."

Alaska State Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email that the highway had reopened at about 8:10 a.m. following the crash, about half a mile north of the highway's junction with the Alyeska Highway. Poindexter and Kyffin, the sole occupants of their respective vehicles, had reportedly been wearing seat belts.

Anchorage School District spokeswoman Patti Layou said school buses to and from Girdwood were delayed by the crash. School-bus operator Reliant Transportation had sent an automated call to affected students' parents explaining the delay Monday.

Troopers said no citations have been issued in the collision, which occurred during "icy conditions" along the highway.

The Toyota and the Jeep were both totaled in the crash.
