Magnitude 4.6 earthquake shakes southern Alaska

VALDEZ — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck southern Alaska early Wednesday.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the earthquake hit just after 1 a.m. and was centered about 48 miles northwest of Valdez and 93 miles east-northeast of Anchorage.

The survey says the quake was about 21 miles deep.

The National Tsunami Warning Center says a tsunami is not expected.

Correction: This story has been edited to reflect that the quake occurred just after 1 a.m., not 2 a.m.
