Hamburger chain Smashburger heading to Alaska in 2016

Another hamburger chain is making its way to Alaska.

Smashburger, the Denver-based chain with over 300 locations in the U.S. and abroad, plans to open three restaurants in Anchorage and the Mat-Su over the next three years.

Spokeswoman Christine Ferris said in an email the exact locations of the restaurants are yet to be determined. She said they plan to open the first restaurant in Anchorage sometime in late 2016.

The chain announced plans last week to add 15 locations in Alaska, Texas and California according to the Denver Post.

The fast-casual restaurant chain claims to be the "Starbucks of burgers," allowing customers a wide range of burger toppings and buns as well as unconventional sides like "veggie frites" -- flash-fried green beans and carrot sticks -- pickle chips and "smash fries," french fries tossed in olive oil, garlic and rosemary. It also serves chicken burgers, salads and "hand-spun" milkshakes.

Smashburger isn't the first burger chain to enter the Alaska market recently. BurgerFi opened in Anchorage in late 2014. It plans to expand to a second location next year, alongside a Krispy Kreme, in summer 2016.
