Unalakleet ATV rider found dead after day-long search

A Unalakleet man, last heard from after an all-terrain-vehicle trip over the weekend, was found dead Monday, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Next of kin for 36-year-old Harold Soxie have been notified, troopers said in a dispatch Monday afternoon. Soxie was reported missing to troopers Sunday night after he had reportedly headed north Saturday to meet an acquaintance in the vicinity of Egavik.

A family member reported receiving two phone calls from Soxie: one on Saturday evening saying he had returned to Unalakleet from his trip, and another early Sunday, which the family member missed. Relatives reported Soxie missing after they were unable to find him Sunday.

"Unalakleet SAR was not able to search surrounding trails that evening due to inclement weather, and information on hand indicated he was in Unalakleet," troopers wrote. "Unalakleet SAR conducted a search inside Unalakleet with no success."

Members of Unalakleet SAR weren't able to search the area near town until Monday morning.

"At approximately (10:49 a.m.), AST received notification from the search party that they had found the body of Harold Soxie approximately 5 miles north of Unalakleet on an established trail," troopers wrote. "Soxie's ATV was located approximately 2.1 miles further northeast of his body."

Troopers said no signs of foul play have been found in Soxie's death, but his body will undergo an autopsy at the State Medical Examiner's Office in Anchorage.
