A small plane landed on the Seward Highway Monday afternoon near the Tesoro gas station at the edge of Girdwood, according to the National Transportation Safety Board.
No injuries were reported in the landing, which happened shortly before 2 p.m.
The PA-18 Super Cub's engine failed, forcing the pilot to make an emergency landing, said Millicent Hoidal, NTSB aviation accident investigator. The pilot took off from Girdwood and was planning to return to the town's airport, Hoidal said.
"Just a local flight," she said.
The Girdwood Fire Department got report of the plane landing at 2:04 p.m., said fire chief Will Day. By the time firefighters arrived to the stretch of highway, near Mile 90, "the pilot along with bystanders were pushing the plane along the highway to a pullout," Day said.
The fire department closed the highway for about 10 minutes while people moved the plane. Day said he did not know if the pilot had any passengers.
Hoidal said the pilot didn't mention any passengers when talking to the NTSB. Since there was no damage to the plane, the agency will not conduct any further investigation into the landing, she said.
