Fairbanks woman fatally struck by car on Steese Highway

A Fairbanks pedestrian died after she was struck by a car on the Steese Highway Tuesday, according to Alaska State Troopers.

Troopers said 84-year-old Leila Peterman was walking north of Fox, about 11 miles outside Fairbanks, when she was hit by a 2013 Subaru driven by 25-year-old Tyrel Christensen, also of Fairbanks. Troopers were first informed of the collision just before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Peterman "was walking across the highway back to her house after checking the mail," troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said. "It was dark and she was in the road. It is not a lit area."

Peters said that Christensen cooperated with investigating troopers and that no citations have been issued.
