Snowmachiner killed on railroad tracks near Fairbanks

A snowmachiner was found dead on railroad tracks outside Fairbanks Wednesday after his snowmachine flipped, Alaska Railroad Manager of External Affairs Tim Sullivan said. The rider, 28-year-old Jason Campbell of North Pole, was not hit by a train.

According to Sullivan, around 9 a.m. railroad crews spotted Campbell's body on the Eielson branch of the tracks, east of the city. Sullivan said it appeared Campbell had been riding his snowmachine next to the tracks when it was caught in the tracks or on a railroad switch, which launched him off the machine.

Sullivan did not know the man's exact cause of death, but said his body was taken to the State Medical Examiner Office for an autopsy and has since been released to next of kin.
