1 dead in Saturday fire off Steese Highway

A fire Saturday killed one person at a home off the Steese Highway, Alaska State Troopers said.

Few details were immediately available, but in an online dispatch, troopers said the agency was notified of the blaze inside a home at Mile 41 of the highway at 5:53 a.m. Saturday. The Steese Highway connects the interior town of Fairbanks and the eastern community of Circle.

Troopers were told one person did not make it out of the home. A deputy state fire marshal responded to the area later in the day and found human remains in the debris. Troopers spokesperson Megan Peters said the agency would not be releasing the person's identity until the State Medical Examiner's Office made a positive ID.

"The remains were badly damaged by the fire," Peters said.

There was no fire department response to the fire and the structure was a total loss, troopers said.

Peters declined to provide any additional information Monday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
