Week-long search suspended for missing man near Wrangell

Alaska State Troopers are asking for the public's help in the search for a Wrangell man, last seen more than two weeks ago at a cabin.

According to a Tuesday trooper dispatch, 38-year-old Brandon Peterson was seen by members of the Wrangell Fire Department at about 1 a.m. on Dec. 13 at a cabin in the settlement of Tom's Place, roughly 20 miles south of the Southeast Alaska community.

"Peterson, who was reportedly intoxicated at the time, refused assistance from the Wrangell Fire Department at that time," troopers wrote.

Firefighters returned to Peterson's cabin after a welfare check was requested for him on Dec. 17, and looked unsuccessfully for him using a search-and-rescue dog.

"A grid search and a search with a SAR dog on (Dec. 18) occurred without success," troopers wrote. "Between (Dec. 18 and Dec. 24) multiple searches involving a SAR dog, volunteers on ATVs and boats were conducted without success. The active search effort has been suspended pending new leads."

Peterson's next of kin have been notified of the situation.

Anyone with information on Peterson's whereabouts is asked to contact either local law enforcement agencies or the Wrangell trooper post at 874-3215.
