A Western Alaska school suffered an estimated $10,000 in damage during a theft from the building overnight Saturday, with Alaska State Troopers still seeking those responsible.
Troopers said in a dispatch they were informed Sunday of the break-in at the Pilot Station School, located in the Yukon River community of the same name roughly 11 miles east of St. Mary's. The incident reportedly occurred between 10:30 p.m. Saturday and 7:15 Sunday.
"An unknown number of assailants (entered) the school by breaking a window in the school office then proceeded to enter various offices by smashing out windows and doors," troopers wrote. "School staff is still determining what was taken."
Cory Stringer, the school's instructional leader, said Sunday the burglary appeared to target cash being kept inside the building.
"They broke a window -- broke through a couple windows -- into the student store," Stringer said. "They took maybe a thousand dollars."
Stringer said there wasn't any immediate word on suspects in the case, the first incident of its kind at the school in some time.
"We haven't had a break-in here for the last eight to 10 years," Stringer said.
The K-12 school will reopen as usual on Monday while troopers investigate the theft.
"We've got some good maintenance crews; they came in and did some good work," Stringer said. "I'll just have to look at plywood in my office for a bit."
Troopers are asking anyone with information on the break-in to contact the St. Mary's trooper post at 907-438-2019.
