Arts Scene: Charlie Chaplin, 'Finding Vivian Maier' and van Gogh's last weekend in Anchorage

Film

'Finding Vivian Maier'

In conjunction with the "100 Snapshots" exhibit, the Anchorage Museum will screen "Finding Vivian Maier," a documentary about a nanny who secretly took more than 100,000 photographs of everyday life. That's 100,000 pictures on film, folks, from the days before digital shots and unlimited image storage. After spending decades tucked away in lockers, the trove was discovered at an auction in 2007 and critics declared Maier to be a master of "street photography." The showing will take place at the museum at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, which just happens to be a half-price night with regard to admission.

Art

Van Gogh exhibit

The traveling multimedia celebration of Vincent van Gogh's life and art will leave the Anchorage Museum after this weekend. An "immersive" experience with large-screen projections of van Gogh's paintings, historical photographs, music and biographical information surrounds viewers and gives a close-up look at the artist's techniques. Tickets to the show are in addition to museum admission, which, as noted above, is half-price on Friday.

Film

Chaplin's 'City Lights'

The Anchorage Symphony Orchestra presents the full-length Charlie Chaplin silent film classic "City Lights" at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, in Atwood Concert Hall. Named one of the top 100 movies of all time, the touching comedy features the Little Tramp in all his glory, accompanied by the orchestra playing music that Chaplin composed for the film. It was a huge hit with local audiences when it last played here 10 years ago, and we're guessing it'll be just as good this time. Tickets are available at centertix.net.
