Pilot Station jail escapees back in custody, troopers say

Three men were arrested after one of them helped the two others escape from the Pilot Station jail Tuesday evening -- the same jail one of the inmates had already escaped from twice.

In a Wednesday dispatch, troopers said 22-year-old Dale Fancyboy entered the jail in the Yukon River village at 11:30 p.m. carrying a shotgun.

"Fancyboy then pointed the shotgun at the unarmed emergency jail guard who had been hired by Alaska State Troopers," troopers wrote. "Fancyboy then removed two prisoners from their cells. All three individuals then left the jail."

Locals apprehended Fancyboy and he was held at the jail in the Yukon River village, but troopers say the two men he freed -- 19-year-old Thomas Heckman and 22-year-old Dion Joseph – were not immediately caught.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said the men were apprehended by troopers before Wednesday evening, although she did not provide a more specific time.

"Heckman had been arrested for his involvement as an accomplice with Joseph in the theft of a vehicle, burglary and assault," troopers wrote. "Joseph was being held due to several outstanding warrants and two previous escapes from the Pilot Station Jail."

Joseph had escaped from the jail twice in November, when "he was unsecured and walked away," Peters said.

Troopers were traveling Wednesday from nearby St. Mary's to Pilot Station to investigate.
