Three Alaskans earn spots on national cross-country ski teams

Three young skiers from Anchorage will head to Europe next month as members of national cross-country teams.

Thomas O'Harra of Alaska Pacific University was named to the U.S. team that will compete at the World Junior Championships on Feb. 18-29 in Romania.

Hunter Wonders of APU and Gus Schumacher of the Alaska Winter Stars earned spots on the Under-18 team that will race Feb. 21-29 at an international ski series in Estonia for racers 18 and younger.

All three made the team based on their results at this week's U.S. Cross Country Championships in Houghton, Michigan. Team selections were announced Friday by the U.S. Ski Team.

O'Harra, a 19-year-old East High graduate, made the World Junior team for the third time. In 2014 at the championships in Kazakhstan, he placed 54th in the freestyle sprint; last season in Italy, he finished 14th in the classic sprint.

O'Harra won the junior men's freestyle sprint this week at the national championships to clinch his third trip to the world juniors.

Wonders, a 17-year-old skier for South High, was the top qualifiers for the boys' U-18 team. Schumacher, a 15-year-old on the Service team, was the second qualifier.
