Special teams are especially hurting the Seawolves

Even a dude who has to lean on Bartlett High math he didn't pay enough attention to can cite a principal shortcoming for the UAA hockey team this season.

After Friday's 6-2 loss at Bowling Green, UAA opponents in 24 total games have outscored the Seawolves 74-58. That's a differential of 16 goals.

Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but that overall differential (-16) is almost exactly the differential on special teams, which is -15. UAA's opponents have scored 20 power-play goals and 7 short-handed strikes for 27 special-teams goals. UAA has scored just 11 power-play goals -- sophomore winger Tad Kozun has six of them -- and one short-handed goal for 12 special-teams goals. Ergo, a special-teams differential of -15.

If the Seawolves had that differential down to single digits, seems like they probably would have at least a couple more wins.

UAA is 1-6-1 in its last eight games after an 8-6-2 start.

The Seawolves, tied with UAF for ninth place in the 10-team WCHA, are 9-12-3 overall and 6-10-2 in the WCHA heading into next weekend's home series against last-place Alabama-Huntsville.
