Arts Scene: Artists translate coastal science; 'Turandot' talk

Art

Photos in wax

For the "ShoreZone" exhibit, the Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council has asked three local artists to take a look at high-resolution digital images of coastal habitat and translate them into paintings. The images are used by scientists to produce hard data in a searchable form. Janet C. Hickok, Terisia Chleborad and Ness Nouveau -- all of whom work with cold wax or encaustic media -- found inspiration for their muses from the same photos, which are displayed along with the finished product. You can meet the artists at the Adventure Room of the Hotel Captain Cook between 5 and 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28. The exhibit will remain up on Friday.

Theater

Dinner with the grandmas

Anchorage Community Theatre presents a heartwarming comedy, "Over the River and Through the Woods," about a young New Yorker on the verge of moving to Seattle. His very Italian grandparents want to keep him close and try to set him up with the charming young lady from across the street in a scheme that involves guilt, board games and a whole lot of cooking. Linda Benson directs. Performances are at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays through Feb. 14. Two-for-one tickets and free admission for high school students take place on Thursdays, and tickets are available by calling 907-868-4913 or at actalaska.org.

Opera

Talkin' 'Turandot'

Opera is splashy by definition. But a lot of us think that the splashiest production ever is the Met's staging of Puccini's "Turandot" as created by Franco Zefferelli, the master of the big-screen spectacle. And the big screen is how you can enjoy the big spectacle when a live performance from the Met is broadcast at 12:55 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at Century 16. It will be repeated at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. This might be a good time to sign up for Frozen Music's pre-opera meet-ups in the Turnagain Arts Building, 4105 Turnagain Blvd., right off Spenard Road. Composer/pianist Kathleen Bielawski will lead a discussion about the plot, the music, the composer, the cast and why everyone loves the hit tune "Nessun Dorma." The session takes place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28. Cost is $12. Call 907-245-2328 for more information or go to frozenmusic.com.
