Alyeska Cup state slalom titles go to Stahla, Lundgren

Jack Stahla and Amanda Lundgren set the pace in both runs to capture state championships in the slalom Saturday at the Alyeska Cup in Girdwood.

Stahla posted a solid lead in both runs of the boys race to claim his second state title of the week. The winner of Thursday's giant slalom state championship, he added the slalom title by beating Adam Garrigus by about 2.5 seconds.

Lundgren used a dominating second run to take her first state championship of the week. She owned a narrow lead over Sanne Cassee — the winner of the super-G and giant slalom state crowns — in the first run of the girls race, winning by .22 of a second. She blazed through the second run to finish with a two-run total time nearly 1.5 seconds faster than Cassee's.

Skiers from Anchorage, Juneau, and Fairbanks competed on the snow-covered upper mountain of Alyeska Resort, where variable light and snow conditions sent many racers hiking uphill for missed gates and disqualified others.

In a U-14/U-16 slalom held on a different course, titles went to Sage Hildreth and Randi Von Wichman.

Saturday's race was the final state championship event in the week-long race series, but stakes are still high for Sunday's final slalom. U-14 skiers are competing for spots in the Western Region championships and U-14 and U-16 skiers are vying for berths on the Arctic Winter Games team headed to Nuk, Greenland, later this month.
