Arts Scene: Free brass concert, artists talk and Arctic Siren shows return

Art

Talkin' paint

Artists showing work at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art will discuss their exhibitions on Thursday, Feb. 11. New paintings and mixed-media pieces by Don Decker and Sarah Melissa Whalen are on display in the Center Gallery and North Gallery, respectively, and a group show of paintings from outside Alaska -- appropriately titled "Outside In" -- curated by Honor Bowman is hanging in the South Gallery. Decker, Whalen and Bowman will all be on hand for the talk at the gallery, 427 D St., starting at 7 p.m. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and light refreshments will be served.

Music

Brass act

The Chugach Brass will be featured in a concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at First Covenant Church, 12th Avenue and C Street. It's part of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra's "Stained Glass Concert" series and includes trumpeter Linn Weeda, horn player Cheryl Pierce and trombonist Christopher Sweeny accompanied by pianist Dean Epperson. The program contains music that was actually written for brass and piano, and work by Franz Schubert and Vaclav Nelhybel, among others. The event is free, but donations are accepted.

Cabaret

Siren call

The next Arctic Siren Cabaret takes place at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, at the Tap Root Public House, 3300 Spenard Road. It's the 10th season for the popular soirees. Singers lined up include Dawn Berg, Savannah Gagne, Stevi Morton, Lili Werts and Brandon Williams. The fabulous Kevin Barnett Quartet will supply the backup and proceeds will benefit the Irish Dance Academy of Alaska. Enjoy the show with the Tap Root's full menu and bar service. Tickets, $15, are available at the door, but if you don't want to take any chances, get 'em in advance at taprootalaska.com.
