Vehicle burns on inbound Glenn Highway near Eklutna

Anchorage firefighters responded to a vehicle fire inbound on the Glenn Highway near Eklutna on Monday morning.

Fire dispatchers said an initial call about the fire, on the highway between the Eklutna exit and the Eklutna River, came in just after 7:15 a.m.

A video of the fire, sent in by Alaska Dispatch News reader Art Johnson, showed inbound traffic on the Glenn backed up behind the site.

Anchorage Fire Department spokesman John See said the Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department sent four units to the scene. No injuries were reported in the fire but crews spent about 40 minutes securing the unoccupied vehicle that burned, reportedly a Mazda 3 sedan, after the driver pulled over and reported the fire.

"(The Anchorage Police Department) assisted with traffic control," See said. "Everything's back to normal."

Police spokeswoman Anita Shell said no lane closures had been ordered in response to the fire.

See said the Mazda was reportedly a total loss in the fire, with no cause initially determined for the blaze Monday.
