Petersburg police searching for escaped prisoner

Petersburg police are searching for a prisoner who escaped from the town's jail Friday morning.

Local radio station KFSK reported that police were searching for 22-year-old Jacob Sturgeon of Petersburg. The station reported that Sturgeon escaped from the jail just before 11 a.m. Friday.

A Petersburg Police Department dispatcher confirmed that all officers were searching for Sturgeon as of 1:30 p.m. Friday. None were available for an interview.

The Petersburg Medical Center and Petersburg schools were in lockdown mode as of Friday afternoon.

Doran Hammett, chief financial officer for the medical center, said Sturgeon isn't considered an immediate threat. He said hospital staff decided to lock down the hospital out of caution for patients and staff.

Petersburg School District Superintendent Erica Kludt-Painter said that only Stedman Elementary School was in session Friday. She said Sturgeon was not seen anywhere near the school but that the district limited access in and out of the school as a precaution. She said buses wouldn't drop students off at home and parents were asked to pick up their children from school.

Court records show that Sturgeon was charged with two counts of assault and one count of resisting arrest for a Feb. 5 incident.

KFSK describes Sturgeon as 5 feet 9 inches tall and 180 pounds with brown hair.
