20 mushers will drive teams in downsized Rondy sled dog race

A field of 20 mushers will compete in the Fur Rendezvous Race Invitational, a three-day sled dog race that begins at noon Friday in downtown Anchorage.

Mushers will race their teams five miles each day, from Fourth Avenue to a little bit beyond Mulcahy Stadium. Then they'll turn around and go back downtown.

Leading the field of mushers are Ken Chezik, the winner of the 2012 Open World Championship, and Michael Tetzner, the winner of the recent Alaska Sled Dog & Racing Association club championship.

The Invitational is a substitute for the Open World Championship, which was canceled for the second straight year because of poor trail conditions. The Open World Championship consists of 26-mile heats.
