Lumen Christi teams stay alive at Peninsula Conference basketball tourney

Lumen Christi's basketball teams survived consolation-bracket games Thursday at the Class 1A Peninsula Conference basketball tournament in Homer.

The girls stopped Seldovia 47-46 in overtime, and the boys eliminated Kodiak ESS 49-42.

Nyadeng Puoy poured in 27 points to spark the Lumen Christi girls. In overtime, she accounted for seven of the Archangels' eight points.

Seldovia was led by Olivia Turner (19 points) and Marina Chissus (17).

In the boys game, Joey Brown and Jarrett Fortune each scored six points in the fourth quarter to help Lumen Christi outscore Kodiak ESS 19-10.

Brown finished with 16 points and Fortune and Chiebuka Lebechi each furnished 12 for the Archangels.

Damian Bennett's 16 points topped Kodiak ESS.

In Thursday's only other girls game, Ninilchik earned a spot in Friday's championship game by beating Birchwood Christian 44-19. DeeAnn White scored 15 points to lead Ninilchik, which faces Nikolaevsk in Friday's 6:30 p.m. title game.

In boys action, Ninilchik and defending state champion Seldovia won semifinal games to advance to Friday's 8 p.m. championship game.

Ninilchik rode Tyler Presley's 24 points to a 53-43 win over Wasilla Lake, and Seldovia used 24 points from Aiden Philpot to stop Nikolaevsk.

In loser-out action, Birchwood ousted Nanwalek 47-22.
