1 person found dead after fire in Kwethluk

One person was found dead after a residential fire in the Western Alaska village of Kwethluk early Sunday, Alaska State Troopers said.

Troopers received word of the fire in the community of about 800 people about 12 miles east of Bethel just before 6 a.m. Sunday.

"Local public safety officers had controlled the fire and located a person deceased inside," troopers wrote. "Two Bethel-based troopers responded and were later assisted by a deputy fire marshal."

The body will be sent to Anchorage for identification and an autopsy.

Troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters said in an email that Kwethluk residents tried to fight the fire but nobody else was injured.

"They first used fire extinguishers, then tried using hoses hooked up to a nearby hydrant, but it was too late," Peters said.

No cause has yet been determined for the blaze, which left the residence a total loss.

Anyone with information on the fire, which remains under investigation, is asked to call troopers at 907-543-2294.
