Poor weather hinders search for missing Koyuk man

A search-and-rescue effort for a Koyuk man reported missing Thursday was on hold Friday due to rough weather, Alaska State Troopers said.

Roger Hannon went missing during a trip between the Western Alaska villages of Elim and Koyuk, troopers said. Hannon, 22, and a companion were traveling on snowmachines when they lost sight of each other.

A calm day turned to blizzard conditions and "it appears the weather change took them by surprise," troopers spokeswoman Megan Peters wrote in a dispatch.

Hannon's companion arrived in Koyuk alone and reported that Hannon hadn't made it. Hannon was last seen on the sea ice east of Elim.

Searchers from Koyuk and Elim looked for him Thursday but poor weather hindered the search, with visibility severely limited, Peters wrote.

No searchers were in the field Friday morning, Peters wrote.
