Man dies in snowmachine crash near Elim

A Golovin man died Sunday after his snowmachine wrecked near a Northwest Alaska village.

Alaska State Troopers said in a dispatch Monday night they were informed late Sunday of 63-year-old Daniel Amarok's death outside Elim, roughly 100 miles east of Nome.

"It was reported to troopers that Amarok got off trail and hit a tree," troopers wrote.

According to Nome radio station KNOM, Amarok was helping search for 22-year-old Roger Hannon of Koyuk, reported missing March 31 after he and a companion became separated during a snowmachine trip from Elim to Koyuk. Hannon's snowmachine was recovered from the waters of Norton Bay earlier this month, with searchers using underwater robots to look for him.

The crash that killed Amarok will be investigated by troopers when weather allows them to reach Elim.
